Zhou Weihua - Chinese contemporary artist

Zhou Weihua’s New Style of Painting By Lv Peng

When looking at paintings, our eyes’ sensitivity is subjective. Each person’s reaction is different because of this nature. At a young age, Zhou Weihua saw many Chinese paintings of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He began to develop an interest in oil painting when studying art in university. To him, oil painting was purely a technical phenomenon without any special meaning. The cultural struggles through time did not affect Zhou Weihua’s heart. In the beginning, he combined oil and ink painting. He used oil to subconsciously show the traditional concepts of Chinese ink (as in his “Mountain in Autumn” series). He found that the quality of the works of ancient famous painters is hard to achieve. This spiritual achievement cannot be rivaled by any living artist. So, Zhou Weihua began to use a new method of oil painting to achieve new purposes. Zhou Weihua realized that Western modernism is the opposite of the Chinese modern reality. Whatever his considerations may have been, they show that the eyes are influenced by thought. When icons of different periods in history appear simultaneously, viewers see completely different images. .

In Zhou’s works, people, cars, skateboards and toys are flying in beautiful blue skies. Zhou Weihua does not ground his objects. He gives viewers the feeling that these skies are stable and reliable. This is because of Zhou Weihua’s character and mood. Although these reflect the artist’s personal feelings, since the 1990s, certain artists have began to throw out logic, even when painting realistically. It is not necessary to portray reality exactly as it is.
